Dallas-Fort Worth Acid Reflux Surgery Options, Including Nissen Fundoplication

Acid reflux disease, also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), is a chronic condition in which the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach allows stomach acid to enter the esophagus. This acid damages and irritates the tissue of the esophagus, causing chronic heartburn, swallowing problems, hoarseness, nausea, and other symptoms. Minimally Invasive Bariatrics, serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area, offers Nissen fundoplication and other forms of acid reflux surgery. Surgical treatment for acid reflux can alleviate heartburn and other symptoms to prevent long-term structural damage to the esophagus.

Nissen Fundoplication

Nissen fundoplication is the most common form of acid reflux surgery. It is generally performed when non-surgical treatments have proved ineffective. Like surgeries for weight loss, gallbladder removal, hernia repair, spleen removal, and colon and rectal repair performed at our Dallas-Fort Worth-area practice, the Nissen fundoplication acid reflux treatment is a minimally invasive surgery. This means that the surgery is performed through a series of small incisions with the aid of a camera called a laparoscope.

The actual procedure involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower part of the esophagus and suturing it in place. This strengthens and supports the valve that protects the esophagus from stomach acid, helping it be more effective. For the large majority of acid reflux surgery patients whom we treat in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Nissen fundoplication is an effective long-term solution.

Laparoscopic acid reflux surgery has several advantages. The laparoscope allows a better view of the internal structures than traditional open surgery, giving Dr. Glenn Ihde more control over the procedure. Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication patients experience less bleeding, fewer post-surgical complications, less pain, and a shorter recovery period than those who undergo the open procedure. Many are able to recover and return to work within two weeks.

Gastric Bypass

Obesity is frequently accompanied by acid reflux symptoms. As a result, gastric bypass surgery for weight loss often has the additional effect of correcting acid reflux disease. Thus, patients suffering from acid reflux who are also obese can simply undergo a gastric bypass, avoiding the need for Nissen fundoplication.

The EsophyX™System

The EsophyX™ System is an incisionless alternative to Nissen fundoplication. The procedure allows the creation of a strong anti-reflux barrier without any incisions. Instead, Dr. Glenn Ihde threads a specialized surgical device down the esophagus to conduct the procedure. The EsophyX™ System is similarly effective to other forms of acid reflux surgery, with the added benefit of being adjustable and reversible.
